Verse 6. Sutra Three - Sundari

If having been grasped by [teachings]
[it is difficult] to turn around and abandon them,

One holds on to new teachings [after] considering them,

Seeking to gain the correct [understanding], other [teachings] must be voided,

Therefore they speculate [others to be] empty, baseless and void.

所我有以轉捨,
Suǒ wǒ yǒu yǐ zhuǎn shě,
鱻明法正著持,
xiān míng fǎ zhèngzháo chí,
求正利得必空,
qiú zhèng lìdé bì kōng,
以想空法本空.
yǐ xiǎng kōng fǎ běn kōng.

Parallel: The Pali Sutta Nipata, Atthakavagga - Chap. 3, Verse 785

DiscussionThis verse varies somewhat to the Pali in the last two lines.
I've translated 空法 kōng fǎ, in the 4th line as empty, Sanskrit equivalent: sūnyatā.

Verse 5. Sutra Three - Sundari

Not withdrawing [some] declare whatever dharma [that is preferred],

Slandering the noble they are fearful themselves of not being liked,

[Free] from views the noble act without guilt or outflows,

With no need of speculation how can one be angry or pleased?

法不匿不朽言,
Fǎ bù nì bùxiǔ yán,
毀尊我不喜恐,
huǐ zūn wǒ bù xǐ kǒng,
自見行無邪漏,

不著想何瞋憙?
bù zháo xiǎng hé chēn xī?

Parallel: The Pali Sutta Nipata, Atthakavagga - Chap. 3, Verse 784

Discussion: This verse varies somewhat to the Pali. I've translated 漏 lòu, in the 3rd line as outflows, Sanskrit equivalent: āsrava.

Verse 4. Sutra Three - Sundari

By calm abiding one does not cling to the world,

Whilst others boost constantly of their holding strictly to vows,

It is the shrewd who trust in the path of right conduct,

Unattached to a showy-display the people are instructed.

以止不拘是世,
Yǐ zhǐ bùjū shì shì,
常自說著戒堅,

是道法黠所信,

Verse 3. Sutra Three - Sundari

Therefore when practising a path of conduct [and vows],

Inferior is the one when asked promotes their own skills in practice,

There are doubts as to the trueness of that one, for it is not the [right] path.

For they desire to be a learned one seeking to purify themselves [by knowledge].

如有守戒行人,

Verse 2. Sutra Three - Sundari

Relying on their expertise, how can they abandon it,

For they wish with ease to depart from this world,

Unperturbed they cherish supreme virtue,

The making of rules they desire, whilst some [people] they criticise.

Verse 1. Sutra Three - Sundari

Some wrong thinking ones teach deficiently,

Confident, truth minded ones speak virtuously,

When arguments come-around the noble one does [not] get involved,

Having given up good and evil, the [sage] is not concerned.

亦毀於少言,
Yì huǐ yú shǎo yán,
多言亦得毀,
duō yán yì dé huǐ,
亦毀於忠言,

世惡無不毀。
shì è wú bù huǐ.

Parallel: The Pali Sutta Nipata, Atthakavagga - Chap. 3, Verse 780

Discussion: The negative is used in the Pali in the third line. Muni (sage) appears in the fourth line in the Pali parallel.

Title of Sutra Three from Yì Zú Jīng

Sutra Three - Sundari

須陀利經第三
xū tuó lì jīng dì sān

Parallel: The Pali Sutta Nipata, Atthakavagga, Dutthattaksutta - Chapter 3. The Corrupt

Discussion: The title of the sutra refers to the prose story where a woman called Sundari was the the victim of the Brahmans who’s had conspired to discredit the Buddha and his followers by killing her. Before this however she had been told by them to visit the Buddha daily. Soon after they killed her and buried her in the the grounds of Sravasti, after which the people thinking the buddha and his followers had committed the crime refused to give them alms.
Eventually the people released the Buddha and his followers could not have done such a thing based on there good reputation. Thereafter, one of the Brahmans informs on the other Brahmans confessing they had committed the crime and so the Buddha's reputation was fully restored with a visit from King Pasenadi along with apologies.

Verse 8. Sutra Two - King Udayana

Having understood perception with insight one crosses over the flood,

Attachment to the self the noble one does not estimate,

Having not done so [already], determined remove the [arrow] abandon [possessions],

That without doubt [will] cause you to indulge in [this world or another].

Parallel: The Pali Sutta Nipata, Atthakavagga - Chap. 2, Verse 779

Discussion: The noble one in the second line reads muni in the Pali parallel. I've ended with, this world or another as found in the Pali to help complete the verse.
